CMD ARETE, BEN NEVIS - NON ALPINE LIKE

It was a much colder overnight which froze up the snowpack nicely. The guys went for the CMD arete and The Ben today. It was a low cloud day so not much in the way of views, a keen, cold wind with snow showers above 800m. and poor visability most of the day. Excellent hard snow all  the way along from Carn Mor Dearg, quiet on the hill and we had the summit to ourselves. Fast time today, around in just over 8 hrs, well done to all the group in their first taste of winter. This was their training for Mera Peak in Nepal later this year, sure they'll find it a doddle after this!

Hi Gary, at least we had alpine conditions the day before when we did the winter skills course! I'm quite glad I couldn't see how far down the drop is either side of the Arete! Climbing CMD, walking (nervously!) across the Arete and finally tackling the Ben from the North Face was a great challenge and very fulfilling to complete. I'm hoping we can come back next year for another challenge, perhaps with some grade 1 climbing up gullies in...

Thanks Nick. Well done to everyone in 'testing' conditions.

Gary, thanks again for guiding us up 'the Ben' last weekend. The weather was grim at times, which I think made it all the more challenging. Would have loved to have skiied some of those gullies!
Echoeing Nick's comment; a day of more technical climbing is high on my priorities.
I'll be sure to take your kit list recommendations as GOSPEL next time! We got pretty lucky with the weather... could have been much worse!
See you next year
