High winds over the Cairngorms |
What a contrast in temperatures over the last few days. Since the weekend there has been snow loss and a thaw at lower altitudes. For the first time in many weeks the temperatures have been well above freezing in Aviemore, day and night. The Easterlies we have been enjoying recently have been replaced by Atlantic low pressure systems which of course bring warmer temperatures on SW winds. This sets set to continue till the weekend. But it is not Spring! We have a lot of winter to come and it will definitely change to colder conditions soon!

The Cairngorms on Monday
|
On Monday I had another visit to my local Mountain Hare area over on the Monadhliath. Lovely and quiet now the snow has depleted at lower levels so the skiers have stayed at home. Strange walking over heather again in an area that was completely snow covered only 3 days previously.

It was a high winds day up on the Cairngorms with gales blowing. A lot of tree damage throughout the area last few days with the storm force winds over Saturday into Sunday. It was 90mph winds on Cairn Gorm at the weekend with the access road uptown Coire Cas heavily drifted with snow. No pics!

Loch Morlich Ice broken up |
Today I had a low level wander through the Rothiemurchus Pines around Badaguish and down to Loch Morlich. Another warm day low down with some lovely sunshine. Don't be fooled though. Still full snow cover above 700m on the high Cairngorms and below freezing up there.

Meall a' Bhuachaille |
It was lovely to spend an hour or so photographing 2 beautiful Red Squirrel in the trees here. This area is, of course, the best possible place to see these adorable creatures. If you don't see one on a day out in the forest you aren't looking!
They were looking terrific in the bright afternoon sunshine. It was so quiet today. I saw no one around, not even down at Loch Morlich. Bliss.
