RSPB VOLUNTEERING DAY

Tree toppling in the Abernethy Forest
Some wet whinching
Root Plate, good for wildlife
Getting into the forest
Our second stint of volunteering with the RSPB at Abernethy Forest today. Deadwood Creation again. What's that you say? Well it's basically pulling trees down, what?! It's actually a very good thing for the Caledonian Pine forest, some of which was replanted shortly after the Second World War. The trees were planted too close together which doesn't give the vegetation and wildlife much space to thrive. Pulling the trees down by hand with a winch, cable and strops is a more 'natural' way of creating deadwood. The end result looks like the trees have fallen in a storm. Good fun, educational and some exercise on a wet and windy day in the Cairngorms.
