Fresh, drifted snow
|
A frosty morning in Aviemore with below freezing temperatures. Yesterday's snow showers and strong winds continued overnight. A forecast of a bright, clear morning. Cold weather down in the glens in mid March is, of course, normal. Whilst it may be 'Spring' in southern parts of the UK up here in the Highlands it is still very much winter and will be for some weeks still. Enjoy and embrace the final weeks of this winter season! I set off on my usual walk to photograph the Mountain Hares in the Monadhliath.

Frosty windows |

Cold at 400m |

Only ours & hare footprints |
A glorious early start to get the best of the weather. The fresh snow was lying at 400m and a quiet morning with no one about, just us two and a few Mountain Hare tracks..The hares mainly feed during the night and rest in daylight hours. The reason you see the hares just lazing about half of the time!

This location was bare of snow less than 48 hours ago |
What a transformation from less than 48 hours ago. Where I was set p to photograph the Mountain Hares I was in deep snow drifts. On Wednesday it was completely bare and just heather clad.

Hares looking supreme in these conditions |

Gorgeous blue skies |

What wonderful creatures |
I had a fantastic time with this one guy. Both of us lying in the snow and sunshine. I managed to get into a position so that the background of cobalt skies were nicely showing up the hares beautiful white pelage. The latest controversy or should I say 'manipulation in the wildlife photography world is faking the background. Why? Well to suit the photographer. Examples being a grey skies background and editing it later on into a blue sky. Well all my photography is what I saw through the lens with very little editing and certainly no manipulation of colour, background, saturated sunsets and the like.

Some light drifting snow |

Hard, old snow and fresh drifts |

Ankle deep snow and above in places |
There was some light drifting snow in my sheltered spot, higher up the hill the winds much stronger and some wonderful drifts going on. There were some quite deep drifts and on other aspects the walking was easy on scoured slopes.

Rime ice |

Winy higher up, scoured mountainside

Above 800m it there was a chilly and strong wind from the west. Winter is definitely still in charge :)
