A VERY WHITE & WINDY CHRISTMAS DAY

The final slopes of Cairn Gorm
It was back to a usual Cairngorms day after the recent summer conditions. High winds, blowing snow, low temperatures and some poor visibility on our Christmas Day walk today. The skies were clear and the sun was up there but with SE winds in the Cairngorms you'll almost certainly get a cloud cap over the tops. We decided on Cairn Gorm for our Christmas Day 2021 jaunt. We left the house at 7am for an early start at Coire Cas. You know when you're in for a rough day when you sep out I to the wind and have to hold on to the car door, just in case!

Windy even atower elevations

Excellent snow cover

Closed for Xmas

Goggles order of the day

We thought Windy Ridge maybe, well, windy. So we wked up through a deserted Coire Cas. In fact we saw no one all the way up and back down. Goggles were donned half way up and there was a high wind chill at about 900m.

Great to see full on winter conditions after the recent benign weather. You could well have thought snow was actually falling most of the time. It was all windblown. There was blue skies stove and we got some cracking views inbetween bouts of heavy drifting. The winds were in excess of 50mph, even at much lower altitudes. By the time we got back to the car the winds had probably increased to nearer 60mph. A good facial for Christmas!

Happy Christmas !
