WINTER SKILLS & WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

Damp, limited snow on Tuesday
A temperature blip on Monday and Tuesday with summit temperatures above freezing. A complete change today with fresh snow down to Aviemore level this morning and summit temperatures around minus 7 C on the high Cairngorms.

TUESDAY 30 NOVEMBER

On Tuesday I was out with Leona & Euan who were on a  1 day winter skills refresher. Euan had been out with me a few years ago. They were flexible with regards to which hill we went on but were keen to get away from the crowds and skiing areas. Sgor Gaoithe fitted the bill.

Deep, soggy snow

No crampons needed
We had a fun day seeking out what snow was left after the warmth of yesterday. It was very mild on lower down and almost constant drizzle through the day. The plateau areas were just rock so we headed into SW slopes where most of any big areas of snow remained. We saw no one in the carpark and no one on the hill. The views were very limited with the cloudbase down to about 500m. Good banter and good day to test the waterproofs.
I was guiding for Wayymark Outdoors today.

THURSDAY 2 DECEMBER

Overnight the temperatures dropped and fresh snow through the night down to Aviemore this morning. It was nice to have some great views, cold temperatures and light winds on the Monadhliath.
Low snow and colder

Below freezing all day

Early morning clear skies, cloudy later

Lovely conditions for photographing the Mountain Hares. A nice covering of snow at lower elevations and very little wind. I spent some quality time with one individual who I've been photographing since the Spring. He's now almost in his  complete winter pelage. I sat/stood for nearly an hour in many warm layers whilst he was quite cosy in his form.
What a cute face 😊

Almost complete winter pelage
The high Cairngorms were looking lovely and wintry again. I had the whole area to myself day. I saw just one person all day, half way back down the hill in the late afternoon,  it was Steven Fallon.
