BLOWING A HOOLIE

It was a pretty wild day on Ben Lawers with very strong, cold NW blowing a lot of loose snow around even at low levels. Tim, David & Gordon were on day 1 of their winter skills course with me today. We struggled up against the winds and spindrift on Ben Lawers South side, lots of windslab about but also good neve were some slopes have been scoured. We covered axe arrests, step cutting, avalanche awareness and cramponing techniques and also looking for a safety helmet which went flying down the hill! Fortunately it was red and we picked it up on the way off the hill. The winds had eased remarkably by late afternoon and some lovely sunshine to end the day.
