ML ENVIRONMENTAL WORKSHOP

Not quite the ideal conditions
A sizeable part of the Mountain Leader Award now encompasses the mountain environment, access, conservation, landforms, geology and wildlife.  Over the years the standard ML Award has evolved. Guiding groups safely in the hills is only part of a day out. There is a wealth of other interesting aspects of being on mountains for folk to enjoy.

Today I was running a refresher workshop to cover the environmental section of the syllabus. Steve and Rasa joined me to gain a deeper appreciation of the above. I had initially intended to run the day on the high Cairngorms. With so much snowcover at the moment I switched our day to an area with less 'winter' conditions. We had a good day on the Monadhliath. It started off dry but by midday we were in rain and above 700m, snow showers. Tge winds also increased as the day progressed.  Despite the weather we covered a fair chunk of ground and lots of topics.

Snow above 700m

Spring meets Winter

Sundews

Cowberry
The usual wildlife I encounter in this area was well and truly undercover today with the unseasonably cold and wintery conditions. Good luck to Rasa and Steve on their ML assessments later this year.
