BEST 'LOW SNOW' OF THE SEASON

Jo & Fran enjoying the fresh snow
One of the many reasons I love the Scottish winter season is the constant and rapid changes in snow conditions almost every day. As I write this blog the snow is lying on the streets of Aviemore,  the deepest at this altitude all season. This fresh snow arrived last night. Only a couple of days ago we were 'basking' in some silly plus 8 degrees C or higher at Strathspey. A very welcome return to winter!

Yesterday Jo and Fran were out with me on their first taste of winter hillwalking. We had snowballing to around 400m on Sunday evening/ early Monday morning. By the time we had talked through the outline of our day, sorted out crampons, kit list check, etc the snow had ceased falling.

Winter resumes

Lunch with no wind
We had a look at avalanche forecasts and weather forecasts before deciding on our route today. It was a joy to be walking from Coire Cas carpark either snow underfoot from the word go. The snow atower altitudes was superficial and only a few cm's,  but winter was back!
Enjoying winter

Snow ploughing back again

Coire an Lochain
We covered plenty if essential skills during the day and it was lively to have no wind and a conversation in the peaceful,  cold air. Lovely to be out in well below freezing conditions. I missed that cold nip on my face :).

Coire an Lochain more winter-like

The path put of the coire was icy on the walk out, plenty of folk walking and climbing today.
A brilliant day and great company. Fran and Jo loving their first taste of winter hillwalking.

Meanwhile, out in the wodland around Aviemore today:
