Pathless terrain, Cairngorm plateau |
Nina was out with me on her first day of a 2 day bespoke navigation course in the Cairngorms. It's great to see young folk wanting to learn essential map and compass skills. It's all too easy and lazy to think you can navigate in the Scottish mountains with today's various electronic navigation systems. The primary tools for moving around the mountains is still, and always will be, map and compass.
Nina is in Scotland for 6 weeks from the USA. Keen to become an independent hillwalker she wanted the Cairngorms to be the place to learn. A very good choice. These mountains can be the most challenging mountains you will find in the UK.

Breezy up high |
Unfortunately it was a very nice day with sunshine and a cloudbase above the summits. So we were very quickly off all paths and onto featureless terrain up on the Cairngorm plateau.

A great day out, we covered lots of ground and lots of essential skills to be safe and competent in the hills.
