FIRST INTRO WINTER SKILLS FOR 2022

Excellent hard snow and sheltered
John was out with me today for an intro to winter hillwalking course. My first course for this New Year. Thankfully the crazy temperatures came to an halt overnight and into today. The freezing level was around 1000m by the afternoon.

Step cutting
The winds were very strong, gusts up to 70mph. We found some sheltered spots in various locations throughout the day so quite bearable,  in act quite good. When you can talk and listen with one another then that is really a big bonus.
Excellent  hard snow and calm conditions

Great snow for cramponing
All the remaining snow was frozen so Great for step cutting,  honing axe and cramponing and for easier walking conditions overall.
We covered loads of vital and essential skills for hillwalking safely in winter including:
Avalanche awareness
Step cutting
Axe and cramponing
Safe route choices
Axe arresting
Sunny spells

Brilliant fun
A tip day and great company. Despite the limited snowcover and wild winds we got lots done. On the walk down it started snowing around 900m. Do you remember that stuff?
A lot colder and a good dump of snow forecast for the rest of next week with much lower temperatures. Welcome back winter!
A top day and great company with John.
