MOUNTAIN HARE PHTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Snow showers
My Mountain Hare Photography workshops have become a regular part of my business over the last year or so. This winter in particular I've been taking a fair amount of bookings. These days out to photograph our beautiful mountain hare can be booked any time of  the year but winter is my favorite season and it seems the favourite time of year for many photographers.  There is nothing more wonderful than seeing these creatures in their full winter coat sitting and running over snowfields with the majestic Cairngorm mountains as a backdrop.

Beth has already been out with me quite recently on one of my workshops on 31st December. Just 11 days later she booked another day out and was hoping for more snow on this occasion. On Tuesday it started damp but by the time we walked up the hill it had dried up. There had been a sharp rise in temperature on Monday which resulted in snow loss on many of the mountains. A colder night had refrozen what is left of the snow so far easier walking.

Looking promising

Ice hanging on

The sun popped out for about 20 minutes, the best weather all day.

Snow loss

We soon spotted our first hares but they were obscured with the cloud which came coming and going at times. This was coupled with frequent snow showers. The temperature was hovering just above freezing. These are the worse conditions for winter walking and even more so for winter wildlife photography. As soon as you lifted the binoculars they were getting soaked and you couldn't see a dicky bird. With wet clothing and a chilly wind it takes a bit of patience and persevernece to get some captures of the hares.

Our second hare sighting

Toward the end of the afternoon we headed back round to my old friends form. He's always very obliging. Unfortunately Beth's camera was playing up. She was having issues with focusing. We could't work out if it was the damp, wet conditions or maybe its just because it's a Nikon ;).

Snow showers through the day

My friend, keeping an ear out

Plenty of snow showers through the day
Despite no camera for Beth she managed to get some images on her mobile phone. My friend is wonderful at letting you get close enough that a mobile camera can get some kind of photograph so all was not lost.

Just another shake off

Poor light with cloud coming and going

Beth was pleaaed to see the hares in their proper winter environment. It was also the first time she had ever walked in the hills in winter. This is all part of the experience with these beautiful animals. A day out on the hills and time with the hares.

If you would like to book a day out with the mountain hares there are details on my website.
