Map and compass every time |
Another Navigation Course today with Tarmachan Mountaineering. Steve joined me for an introductory course, booking 3 dates in total over the next couple of months. Today we started off with the basics. Orientation of the map, reading the landscape, contour interpretation and taking simple compass bearings.

Some excellent 'realistic ' navigation conditions |
We headed onto the Glenfeshie hills and the higher tops of the 'Sgorans'. This is a favourite area of mine for Navigation Courses. The mountains here offer lots of featureless terrain and many of the summits do not have paths. Even in clear weather they can be confusing without some good Navigation skills.

The odd break in the clouds |
It was a breezy day and after a bright start the cloud base lowered to give Steve some challenges. We also got an hour or so of rain to give some great realistic conditions to get around the mountains in a safe and competent manner. Top marks to Steve. Next challenge in the high Cairngorms.
