A FINE VIEW OF LES DRUS

One of the many wonderful day treks from  Chamonix  is the traverse of the Grand Balcony Nord which runs high above the treeline below the Mont Blanc Massive. The highlight being at the Montenvers end of the traverse when you reach the highpoint of Signal Forbes. At this point you gaze across to the famous rock spire of Les Drus. A massive rock pinnacle with many a climbing epics on its formidable sheer rock faces. I timed it perfectly today as the cloud slowly dissipated through the afternoon. I sat for an hour photographing as the clouds swirled around the summit and the sun broke through. Fabulous views down onto the Mer de Glace and the north face of the Grandes Jorasses too of course. I dragged myself away and slowly ambled down the forest back to Chamonix. Of course many folk see this by using the train from the valley up to Montenvers. That just isn't right, you have to earn this view surely!
