HIGHLAND HEATWAVE

Peaceful up here, madness down at the beach
The temperatures are rocketing everywhere in the UK, hyped up by the media. Who knew its only a few days of heat and no rain to become an official  'heatwave'? I thought it was weeks not days. Apparently not. For many hillgoers I would say 20 C is plenty in the glen. But hey, who can complain about too hot when the sun shines and its wall to wall blue skies like today? Whilst the hoardes flocked to the sands of Loch Morlich (where there was more human flesh than grains of sand) we were up high and off piste again to savour peace and tranquility on the Cairngorm plateau. It wasn't just peace and views we were after. Today was Ptarmigan Photography day.

Beautiful Ptarmigan

Sunbathing and motionless
We only spotted a solitary Ptarmigan but spent over 30 minutes with this settled individual. Nothing better than lying on a carpet of grasses and crowberry in sunshine, observing and photographing wildlife.
The plateau

Lingering snow
We wandered around in the afternoon,  still no one around apart from a few folk heading up on established paths late in the day.
We weren't outdone by the crowds at Costa del Morlich, we found our own lochan in the hills to soak our feet, didn't see a soul.

NOT Loch Morlich!
