QUALITY WINTERS DAY

Mike and Andy were back again with me on a two day mountaineering course this weekend. Today we covered steep ground and constructing snow shelters aswell as the usual battling and coping with severe weather on a typical Scottish mountain day. We were on the steep SW slopes of Ben Lawers which leads up to the summit area were a fissure holds snow very well. Here we made ourselves a wee lunchtime shelter before heading onto the summit. There was some excellent rime ice on the rocks above 1100m and large amounts of snow. We had snowfall from mid day onwards and strong SW winds. The freezing level was rising today but we still had snow falling to 900m. Poor visability with cloud down to 600m by the afternoon. Everything looks set for another snowy March, just like last year.
