4 DAYS OF AMAZING CONDITIONS

Coire an Lochain, Friday
It has been a fantastic week here in the Cairngorms.  With sustained very low temperatures, blue skies, wall to wall sun and heaps of powder to low levels. The great spell of winter conditions coincided with 4 days of Mountain Hare Photography workshops.

WEDNESDAY 8 MARCH

A forecast of superb conditions for Colin. We headed into the high Cairngorms. Stunning blue skies, no wind and heaps of snow to low levels.

Deep powder no problem for this wee guy

THURSDAY 9 MARCH

Colin's second day out with me to photograph the mountain hares. After yesterday's superb condtions in the high Cairngorms we headed to the Monadhliath.

It was very quiet on the other side of the Spey. Just has we like it. We saw no one all day and had 3 hours 49 minutes with my wonderful wee friend who was so obliging.
Hello my friend

Despite the lower altitude than yesterday,  it was another very cold day. But with the delight of our hare letting us stay for a big chunk of his day then we just shrugged off the cold.

FRIDAY  10 MARCH

My body snow plough to get to the hare

Another glorious blue skies day with no wind. Back to the high Cairngorms with more wonderful moments with 1 hare. 3 hrs 40 minutes spent with this one.

The clouds rolled in by mid afternoon. The ever changing light on the snow and on the hare. Fabulous.

The mountain in the Northern Corries looking wonderful.

On the walk out the clouds lifted and some lovely light at the end of the day. The carpark at Coire Cas this morning was rammed full. There must be an awful lot of self-employed, retired or folk taking 'sickies' I mused to myself. Where me and the hare were it was peaceful and quiet. There is always space to find in the mountains.

SATURDAY 4 MARCH

Jim out on his Birthday present, what a gift!

Jim was out to photograph the hares with me. This was with one of my gift vouchers that his Brother-in-law bought for Jim's Birthday. What a treat he had. Stunning weather once again

It does show that you don't always need the most expensive camera and lenses to photograph wildlife. Jim's camera and lens set up was over 10 years old and not the longest reach but he got some terrific shots. It's about the fieldcraft.

We spent another 3 hrs 30 mins with this lovely character I've spotted recently in the high Cairngorms.
In the sunshine, a breeze picking up

When we first arrived near the hares form it was very calm and wonderful bright light. Around mid -day there was a breeze that picked up. Although only around 25mph it was enoh to whip up all the loose, powder snow that has been lying on the Cairngorms for many days. The mountain hares form was catching a lot of this spindrfit.

No problem he says to himself

Not at all phased

It was amazing to watch an photograph all the spindrift pouring in to the hares wee home. He just wasn't phased at all and sat motionless for a long time. There's a wee video on my Facebook page to give you an idea.

Crawling techniques without getting snow in the lens!
A brilliant wee spell of sun and snow. A lot more winter to come. It's snowing heavily down at Aviemore this morning. Easter is always winter :)
