MOUNTAIN HARE, SNOW BUNTINGS & PTARMIGAN

Hello, I'm back
Tuesday 14th March.

Today I was guiding a mountain hare photography workshop for Shelley who booked less than 24 hrs before. With lots of snow and a promise of a half decent weather forecast we set off into the Northern Corries.

The morning was quite flat light and above 750m poor visibility. Just the odd, short snow flurry. By noon the cloud was starting to lift a little. As we were perched photographing a pair of Red Grouse we noticed a couple of folk who had been following our footprints. Our route (as usual in wildlife photography) was weaving around, up and across slopes and into obscure nooks and crannies. As this couple passed by and made their own footprints I noticed they were clad in Summer fabric boots and one tiny bag between the pair of them. The last we saw of them they were heading up the lower reaches of the Fiacaill Coire Sneachda ridge, on its Western aspect. Let's hope they realised where they were actually heading.

After a few hours of searching and breaking trail through deep, unconsolidated snow we were finally rewarded with a lovely mountain hare who was peacefully sitting in his (her) little (or big) world. We sat for an hour, he didn't budge a cm, in fact he looked like he was sleeping. Fabulous. Great timing too as the sun finally broke through the clouds.

It was a glorious late afternoon with bright sunshine. We topped off the day with some lovely photos of several Snow Bunting in stunning snow and sunlight.

Another top day and top marks to Shelley for ploughing in the knee deep snow.

March has always been the best winter month. :)

We will definitely be having a very snow filled and winter landscape for Easter and beyond.

If you're heading to the hills this Easter then be sure to pack the right kit , ie full winter kit including winter boots, winter clothing and axe & crampons.

Winter continues.........

Ptarmigan images later :)
