| Great cramponing conditions |
Saturday 4th February.
Kate & Stephanie out with Tarmachan Mountaineering on a 1 day winter skills in the Cairngorms today.
A not so promising weather forecast of high winds wasn't looking attractive but we found shelter in the coire and it was very pleasant for the vast majority of the time. Despite the warm spell and snow loss there is some wonderful firm snow and more than enough to get lots of essential winter hillwalking skills in.
We covered axe and crampon techniques, step cutting, avalanche awareness, weather & route choice and that good old favourite, axe arresting at the end of the day.
Late afternoon the winds picked up and the rain turned to hail/snow as the freezing level lowered. Winter rreturns!
A top day with great company.
