ZINAL

Weisshorn & Zinal Rothorn

I love Zinal. It holds a special place for me with some memorable days out. You could spend at least a week in this beautiful wee town. Days out or longer forays to climb one of the many 4000m peaks which encircle the valley. Zinal lies at the head of the Val d'Anniviers and is easy accessed from a good postbus service from the Rhone Valley. I love it so much I am running a centre based walking holiday here in 2023. Watch this space!

Zinal is a location that we visit on the Walkers Haute Route. On Sunday we walked over from La Sage.

 Sunday 11th September

The section of the Walkers Haute Route from La Sage in the Val d'Herens to Zinal in the Val d'Anniviers crosses 2 cols with a total of 2000m of ascent. A big day with big views. The view from the Col de Sorbois looks across to a wall of big 4000m peaks: Bishorn, Weisshorn, Zinal Rothorn, Ober Gabelhorn and just sneaking into view, Matterhorn. Brilliant clear skies all day. With the Northerly airflow we've been enjoying the last few days this has given superb clarity.

We spotted 2 Golden Eagle in 2 separate locations, the second occasion right above us on the Col de SSorebois

Absolutely stunning views and one of my favourites.

Top day again!

MONDAY 12 SEPTEMBER

Wonderful traverse to Cabane du Grand Mountet
A day off guiding and a rest day for my group on the Haute Route.
It was another belter of a day, wall to wall blue skies. A slight grass frost at 2000m above Zinal first thing but once the sun was up it was beautiful t-shirt conditions.
One of the finest walks from Zinal is up to the Cabane du Grand Mountet. Located up above 2800m it offers glorious views of the finest 4000m peak in The Alps, Dent Blanche. This beautiful, peak displays its wonderful symmetry and is surrounded by several glaciers. Whilst the show off Matterhorn may indeed look the business it can be viewed from a town. The Dent Blanche is tucked away amidst the giants of the Ober Gabelhorn and Zinal Rothorn. It requires a lengthy 4.5 hr walk from Zinal before you get to see it in all its glory.
The stunning walk from Zinal traverses a huge rock face below Besso. From a distance it looks improbable to walk, but the Alps being the Alps there is a fine traverse path that weaves and clambers its way to eventually reach the Cabane. What glorious views whilst sampling the Rosti and refreshments.
Only in the Alps can you leave a 3 star Hotel and walk with ease amongst stunning mountain scenery, get fed at a hut and return back to luxury within 9 hrs.
Tip top day.
