NEAR WHITE OUT CONDITIONS

Plenty of accurate navigation required

Mostly unconsolidated snow
Best of any views today

Cairn Gorm

Poor visibility

Coire an t-Sneachda
George was out with me today for a day to refresh some vital winter skills. We headed into Coire an t-Sneachda for a recap on movement on snow, but no ice around in the unconsolidated snow. The cloud was well down all day with just the odd glimmer in the morning. Light winds and a minus 3 C temperature on the summits. In the afternoon George wanted to concentrate on some navigation skills. Perfect conditions for it. Poor visibility all the way up to Cairn Gorm summit. The 'best' conditions were saved for the ground to the east of the Munro where it was near white out all the way down to the ptarmigan café. We even had the compass into over time down Windy Ridge. Throughout the day we covered loads on avalanche awareness and assessment.
A top day out and excellent map reading and compass skills form George. Great company today. Better weather tomorrow with some views, maybe.
