Coire an Lochain

Snow down to 700m, made by Mother Nature
After a wet and mild spell up to the weekend it was back to winter again on Sunday. Strong, cold winds and snow falling for much of the day yesterday. This morning it was much colder. Freezing point at Coire Cas carpark. Minus 4 C up along the tops this afternoon on The Cairngorm plateau. I took a wander into Coire an Lochain. Once off the main path there was some deep deposits and drifted snow to contend with making progress slow. Above the lochan in the coire there was some brilliant conditions. Refrozen old snow, water ice, rime ice and fresh snow. The strong winds had eased by the time I gained the plateau but still enough to give a high windchill when you took your gloves off for any length of time. Only a few pairs of climbers seen today on the cliffs of Coire an Lochain and Sneachda. The plateau is wind scoured and mostly rocky and bare. Over the course of this week there will be a lot more snow falling as temperatures set to be around minus 3 or lower. Tomorrow looks very windy. A short passage of rain in slightly warmer temperatures followed by snow and lowering freezing levels into the afternoon. Won't be a nice day on the hill tomorrow!
Looking good for next week. Snowshoes again?
