POOR VISIBILITY, THAW & WIND

A break from the wind

Saturday 21st January.

After that boring blue skies and no wind day yesterday it was lovely to be out in gales and poor visibility today. Despite the milder temperatures there is still a lot of snow above 800m. Summit temperatures also well below freezing most of the day.

Axe and boot skills

Axe arresting

Maria & Alex were out with Tarmachan Mountaineering for an intro to winter walking today.

We covered lots of essential skills including staying upright. But mostly it was axe and crampon techniques,  avalanche awareness and digging snow shelters with just the axe, no cheating by using shovels here.

Emergency (food time) snow shelters

Chilly, despite milder temperatures

High winds are always a major aspect of venturing in the Scottish hills in winter, especially here in the Cairngorms. Being organised with your kit, planning routes and knowing what can and cannot be achieved are big factors to consider.

Beautiful end to the day

A top day with top company.

This day with Tarmachan Mountaineering was another gift voucher from Maria to Alex. Originally booked 2 Winter's ago but covid lockdowns interfered with their plans.
