LAST DAY OF 2022, MOUNTAIN HARE PHOTOGRAPHY

Stunning day

Saturday 31st December.

A stunning day to end 2022. Made even better whilst guiding on a Mountain Hare Photography workshop with Cheryl. Conditions couldn't have been any better. Wall to wall sun, deep snow, no wind, well below freezing. We had a good sighting of 2 hares early in the day but it was quiet later on unfortunately.

Glorious sunrise

Clarity and superb snow

Hard work in soft snow

Glorious sunset!

A top day. Hares later.

Thank you to everyone who joined Tarmachan Mountaineering and Gary Hodgson Photography in 2022.

Tomorrow I'm up early, running another Mountain Hare Photography workshops.  The first for 2023 😀

MORE SNOW AND LOW TEMPERATURES ON THE WAY

Lairig Ghru & Braeriach,  Wednesday

A calm day in the Monadhliath on Wednesday. The high Cairngorms were clear of cloud in the morning before a band of snow and cloud swept across the hills by early afternoon.  More snowfall.and low temperatures forecast the next few days. Its shaping up to be a decent winter.
Some photos from Wednesday.

Cairngorms clear in the morning

Cloud and snowfall moving in by early afternoon

Another top day with the Mountain Hares. A calm day with flat light and temperatures probably just above freezing.
This wee hare has some amazing markings on his face and eyes. Another small hare, born this year.
He definitely loves burrowing and making a wee snow pit for himself. I spotted him on 3 occasions during today.

CHRISTMAS WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

Christmas morning with this wee hare

Happy Christmas Holiday folks.

We're enjoying some decent snow in the mountains this festive period. There was more snow falling  at Aviemore level again today. On Christmas Day we had our usual walk up the hills for a guaranteed (every year) White Christmas. There will be snow in the Scottish hills every 25th December if you want a white one. On Christmas morning I spent one and a half hours lieing in swet snow photographing this wee hare.

A wonderful Christmas morning spent in the company of this beautiful wee mountain hare. My new 'friend' this year who I've been photographing since late Spring when he was just a very small, young hare. I identified him early on in the year by his distinctive notch in his ears. He frequents the same few forms in the area and always a delight when I spot him.
Today he let me lie in the snow quite close up, around 2 metres, for well over one and a half hours.
Spending time on wet snow getting soaked and cold is a minor nuisance for us humans. Imagine the weather these beautiful animals endure all their life.
A mild day of late, someone was running while I was photographing

Overnight we had snow back to Aviemore level. Boxing Day was wonderful and quiet where we head for the mountain hares. The trees were looking lovely and bonny again on the lower ground.

We had an hour or so of heavy snowfall on the walk up to see the mountain hares. Perfect timing when we got up high, the clouds lifted and the rest of the day was dry, clear and some very nice sunshine.

Fresh snow in Strathspey

Snowy on the walk up

An hour later and blue skies

Good snowcover for the hares

Stunning and atmospheric

No great images today of the hares. One was completely buried in the fresh snow, he suddenly upped up in a loud of snow and ran gracefully Cross there's snow. Sometimes you just have to marvel.at them when in a stunning landscape like this and forget about trying to capture them on film.

Late afternoon light

What wonderful creatures

By 2.30pm the light was flat, tge sun sinking in thickening cloud. Time to go home. Walking back down the hill the snow started falling again. That was well timed I thought. Whilst I headed back to the comforts and warmth of my house the amazing mountain hares are just getting on with another bout of heavy snowfall and cold temperatures. It never ceases to amaze me how these creatures live in such an hostile environment. They do, and they will always do so.

A CALM DAY IN THE CAIRNGORMS

 Thursday 22nd December.

Nice to get the odd calm day in the Cairngorms.

Today, Mother and Daughter team Barbara and Katie out for a day of winter essential skills. Very low cloud and below freezing on the Plateau. Some fabulous firm snow in some areas, especially coming down the Chais Ridge which is very icy, you won't get far up there without crampons.

We squeezed in some axe arresting at the end of the day and strolled down at dusk.

This day was another gift voucher from Barbara's family. My gift vouchers have been tremendously popular over the last couple of years. If you want a gift for that special person in your life.........

A top day with lovely folk.

WINTER SOLSTICE

Wind and

Another day in the office. Constant, heavy snow showers and strong winds again today. Alice & Angus out for a day of winter skills. Another gift voucher booking ( I'm getting quite a lot of these this year). Tomorrow is Angus's Birthday so a treat from his partner. A day out with Tarmachan Mountaineering in the Cairngorms.

We found some nice sheltered areas with some excellent terrain to gain many axe and crampon techniques. We even managed some axe arresting today before heading back down the hill.

Lighter winds Tomorrow,  yeah.
