BUMPER SNOW COVER IN THE CAIRNGORMS

The team in knee deep snow at 800m

Another day of snow ploughing with my group on day 2 of their winter course this weekend.

Deep snow to contend with again making any progress anywhere in the Northern Cairngorms very tiring and time consuming. We had an hour or so having coffee indoors whilst looking in detail at the avalanche and weather forecasts to decide on our route for the day.

Wading 10 minutes from Coire Cas carpark

Skies clearing

By the time we stepped out of the cafe the skies began to clear. Come 11am the sun peeked through the thin cloud and we were treated to wonderful views.

My kind of Christmas Tree

Deep snow no problem for the mountain hares

Nature at its finest

Meall a Bhuachaille clearing

With conditions like this we were down to a walking speed of  just 1km per hour. This is a fit group and even with 7 folk taking turns to break trail we were not gaining much elevation. We concentrated on some navigation to gain our high point for the day.

Our high point today

Things will not be changing anytime soon. Staying below freezing means powder, powder, powder. Great for skiing, if your on foot then be prepared for some hard graft.

Heading back

Burns starting to fill in

The snowshoes will be coming out of hibernation me thinks.

Hard work

Flying is easier, spot the geese
