DEEP SNOW IN THE CAIRNGORMS

A bit easier going

A huge amount of snow in the Cairngorms. Jenny and her group of 5 pals on a Winter 2 day course with me starting today. The road up Glen More looking bonny this morning with plenty of Christmas like trees.

We discussed route choices with a few options based on the avalanche forecast. It was clear from the start that it was going to be a day of wading through deep snow wherever you ventured. Thankfully there was a steady stream of hopeful climbers heading into Sneachda so this was welcome for a while. We found some steeper terrain to run through boot and axe techniques,  which turned out to be more swimming in snow up hill.

Negotiating deep snow and burns

Deep snow snd poor visibility at 800m

Fuel for deep snow

A fun day with a keen group who were not afraid of breaking trail.

Tackling deep snow on decent

Poor visibility all day

Poor visibility all day above 600m.

If you're heading off to do a big route over a few Munros tomorrow you may want to have a rethink on that 😉.
