4 DAY WINTER SKILLS COURSE

Sheltered from the winds again

Another breezy day in the Cairngorms.  A wet morning,  drier later. Temperatures above freezing at all levels.

On Emma & Alan's final day with Tarmachan Mountaineering we tried to get up to some steep ground again to play with the axes and crampons plus more avalanche awareness. We found shelter in Upper Coire Cas then traversed over into Coire an t-sneachda.

No crampons required

No winds, drier by lunchtime

For the last 4 days we've battled through some wild weather, constantly high winds every day, restricting what we could achieve but we still got lots of vital winter skills into the 4 days.

We can stand up straight!

Coire an t-sneachda

Plenty of snow despite the slow thaw
The winds were stronger in Coire an t-sneachda than in Coire Cas. We only saw 3 folk all day.
Lunchtime

Essential kit, more essential than a phone

A fab week with a lovely couple, the weather didn't phase them one bit, indeed they enjoyed the challenge. Heading into the hills in these conditions is testing and sets you up for the skills needed when the conditions turn bad. If you only ever go out in calm, clear and sunny days then how will you cope in 'bad' weather?

Soggy and snowy

Coire an t-sneachda

In Sneachda the snow was very soft in the floor of the coire. Ankle breaking terrain through the boulders. The wind ramped up. The gusts were stronger. We headed out.
Ice hanging on
