TOUR OF THE CAIRNGORM CORRIES

Descending into Coire an Lochain
Lathia & Jason were out with me on An introduction to winter hillwalking. Completely new to winter they were looking for some good experience in using axe and crampons. When I met them in Aviemore this morning Jason's first words were ' there's not much snow around'. A statement he backtracked on about 4 hours kater 😀

Blue skies first thing

Sneachda lochan

Soft snow in the afternoon again

After a chat on clothing,  kit and equipment we headed into Coire an t-sneachda then up onto the plateau after we ran through the essentials of boot, axe and crampon techniques. Crampons weren't really required but they do give some people more confidence.

Cairn Lochan

Cairngorm Plateau
On the summit of Cairn Lochan we spotted a flock of 40+ Snow Bunting. Wonderful. The last few days I've seen these beautiful birds in both Sneachda and Lochain corries in smaller numbers.
Descending
It was a cloudier afternoon and cooler than of late, well it is still winter of course! We descended into Coire an Lochain. Wonderful snow all theway down.

Quiet and peaceful

We had just come off the snow and sorting out gear, making a racket. Just a few metres away a pair of Ptarmigan just sat on the edge of the snow completely at ease and unperturbed in our presence. A great end to another top day of no wind, clear views and fun in the snow.
