AVALANCHE AWARENESS & NAVIGATION

Hasty Pit

A very mild, soggy, rainy,  strong winds and cloudy day in the Cairngorms. Emma & Alan's 3rd day out with Tarmachan Mountaineering this week. Today we concentrated on Avalanche awareness and assessment plus a load more navigation as we made our journey into Coire an Lochain then up onto the plateau, climbing Creag an Leth Choin (Lurchers Crag) and descended into Lurchers Gully. The winds were full on into the lochain but seemed to ease off a bit on the tops.

A soggy Coire an Lochain
There was light rain from the start and stayed with us for most of the day. With summit temperatures above freezing and gave force winds on the tops once again made for a day of labouring in the mountains. These conditions require old clothing. It's far more uncomfortable walking in these conditions than a sub zero temperatures day.
Navigation time

We observed some avalanche activity in Coire an Lochain, on the Northern  slopes  above the lochan. Probably from last night with the temperature rise. These seemed to be other similar,  small Avalanche debris in other locations too. The dirty coloured snow was the giveaway.

Navigation

Above freezing

Avalanche awareness

A wet pants and 3 pairs of gloves kinda day.

Not many folk seen out on the hill, we spotted just one team of ski tourers at the beginning of the day and the same team back on the path as we walked out.

Some brightness at the end of the day

Another great effort from Alan & Emma. Coping in the winds and Navigation in rain plus walking in soggy snow requires some skill, determination and a pinch of humour.
