WINTER NAVIGATION, CAIRNGORMS

Map and compass,  the no.1 skill

Mark was out with Tarmachan Mountaineering today on a Winter navigation course. The no.1 winter skill. Unfortunately it was clear on the tops all day. So to make the navigation more challenging we took a journey across much of the high plateau, locating  many featureless & obscure places. All by map and compass.

Icy slopes on Cairn Lochan

A stunning day and frozen snow on wind scoured areas this morning.  Crampons a must. Full snow cover above 900m in the Cairngorms. There were a few folk under equipped heading back to the carpark this morning. It is Winter.

The cliffs of Lochain

There may well be a mini heatwave this weekend but don't be fooled. It will still be winter on the Cairngorms with low overnight temperatures freezing up the ssnowpack.

Excellent snow cover on the plateau and great areas to hone your navigation.

More compass work

We slowly made our way onto Cairn Gorm summit from the South. A decent down Windy Ridge, just as the winds picked up again. Winter most definitely is NOT over.  Not till mid April.

Top day.
