ALPINE CONDITIONS, WITH A BREEZE

Morning ice

Alpine conditions and skies with a wee breeze thrown in at the Cairngorms today.

Gavin and friends are on a 2 day winter course this weekend. A stiff breeze at Coire Cas carpark this morning and a breezy walk in to Coire an Lochain. We covered plenty of essential movement with axe and crampon techniques and some avalanche awareness and assessmentt.

There has been some avalanche activity last couple of days in the Northern Cairngorms, as can be seen by various areas of debris. Don't forget folks a MODERATE avalanche risk is still very much just that. Read through the reports every day.

Steep ground, safe route choices

Great conditions for cramponing

Avalanche assessment is always an ongoing daily practice on every outing in winter.

We made our way up to Cairn Lochan, the winds easing a tad in the afternoon.

Less windy in the afternoon

Splendid afternoon

A wind/sun burn day if you're not greased up in these conditions. For our afternoon break from the winds we headed to a snow shelter area. Lovely out of the gales.

Cooling off and out the wind

The plateau still holding lots of wonderful snow. Plenty of folk out walking,  climbing and skiing.

Top day, as always.
